Camp History In 1974 the camp was operated by the City of Jersey Citys Division of Youth Services (DYS) and was situated along the waterfront surrounded by undeveloped property and wildlife. In 1980 the Camp was relocated to its current site, previously the Skyline Cabana Club. The Educational Arts Team, a non profit agency, and at one time a City of Jersey City project under DYS, has operated the Camp since 1981. Upkeep for this site has been provided primarily by the Public Works Department of the City of Jersey City. In recent years Liberty State Park has also supported our efforts by planting trees, cutting the grass and providing other assistance. Camp Liberty, however, has had no major renovation and is essentially utilizing the original Cabana facilities constructed over 50 years ago.
Camp Libertys tranquil five acres offer children a remote and safe sanctuary in the midst of an urban environment. The facility includes the original in-ground swimming pool, softball field, multi-purpose field, handball courts, restrooms and changing areas, and covered pavilion area with a stage for plays, tables for lunch, arts and crafts, rainy day activities, as well as a playground (erected in 1997 by Saturn Corporation) and recently resurfaced basketball court (done by Department of Public Works in 2001).
Camp Liberty has grown from serving 50 campers each day in 1974 to 200 young people at this time. | | | |
